A Third Officer is the most junior officer in charge of a navigational watch, certified under STCW Table A-II/1. On most ships the rank also carries safety equipment and, often, the LSA/FFA maintenance records.
A first post as an officer is usually won on paper: a crewing officer compares certificates, watchkeeping sea service as a cadet and the GMDSS certificate before any interview. Your records have to be complete and easy to read.
