A Chief Officer (Chief Mate) is the management-level deck officer certified under STCW Table A-II/2, responsible for cargo operations, stability, deck maintenance and the deck crew, and next in line to the Master.
A Chief Officer is hired on a management certificate, ship-type experience (tanker, bulk, container) and cargo endorsements. Companies read the sea-service record closely — ship type, DWT and time in rank — so that record has to add up without a calculator.
